Question:
In the ATP tennis ranking points system, how many points does a player get for defending a title?

For example, Federer defended his title in Cincinnati this year while if he had lost the final he would have dropped points. But does the fact that he defended the title mean he gets another 1000 points or does he get no bonus points seeing as he matched last year's result? I have always been confused by this detail of the ranking system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When a tennis player matches his/her previous year's result, he or she does not receive any points because the same number of points that are deducted (from the previous year) are gained back again (from the current year's result). That's how it works, so it's a bit harsh. Someone could win a tournament two or more years in a row, but will receive zero points every time except for the first time he or she won the title.

I actually think what you're talking about would be a great little addition to the ranking system. Encouraging players who won a title last season to try harder to win the same title again with all that pressure on them to keep their ranking position the same would be nice. A lot of guys who get behind in a tournament often just quit knowing they'll have more chances to get back the points later. However, if you won that title before and you know you have a chance to gain a balanced amount, say 100 point bonus for a Master's Series tournament, for repeating, you would think players would try even harder.

But I think more over the main thing that annoys me about the ATP is the fact that the grass season is so short. I would love to see a grass Master's Series tournament added. At least one. Clay has 3, and Hardcourts have something like 8. The grass season is just too short (in my opinion, grass is the best surface to watch tennis played on as that's what the game was designed to be played on) and the big names are forced to play grass tune-ups that are only worth 250 points when they never play tournaments that are worth so little. It's kind of silly.

you just keep the points from when you won the tournament the previous year. no points are gained or lost and you stay on the same points total in the rankings.

Once an event is finished they lose the points they won last year and gain the points they won this year.

No.Actually he gets 0 points. If you successfully defend you title you get 0 points. You only get points like this:If you lost in the quarterfinals last year and you got to the semifinals this year you get semifinals points-(minus)quarterfinals points...That's why its called"defending points"...
