Which player should have won a second slam title: Jana Novotna, Gabriela Sabatini, or Conchita Martinez?

A quick breakdown for each player:

Jana Novotna - Jana had a nice career, and finally beat Steffi for the 1998 Wimbledon title. That eased the pain when Jana lost to Steffi in 1993. Jana was a great serve and volleyer, and her talent was unquestionable.

Gabriela Sabatini - Sabatini was usually stopped at Grand Slam events by Steffi and Monica. Gaby reached 3 Grand Slam finals, winning once. Sabatini had a terrific topspin backhand and developed an all court game. However, Sabatini's serve was a constant problem, and Steffi and Monica took adavantage of it. When Sabatini beat Steffi in that 1990 US Open final, who would have thought that it would be her first and last Slam title?.

Conchita Martinez - Conchita was a solid player, and pulled the upset beating Martina for the 1994 Wimbledon Championship. However, Conchita never really came close to winning another Slam title after that.

Please compare these 3 players, and decide which one should have won a second slam title?.

Jana Novotna should have won another slam. She was a more complete player than the other two. She was also a great serve and volley-er and more entertaining to watch.

If it wasnt for the 1993 wimbledon final I would have said sabatini. She had lots of game an she should have at least won the french open.

But in 1993 novotna vs. graf novotna was up 4-1 in the third set. And lost.

Conchita martinez wasnt really that good.

Novotna should have won a second slam because she came the closest to doing it.

Sabatini got to a usopen final before winning the us open in 1990 but lost in 3 sets to graf. But she never really had any big chances in that match.

Winner: Novotna

probably on talent alone, Sabatini should have won more than one slam. She was the only person that could really challenge Steffi Graf before Monica Seles came along. Then she lost her serve, 2nd serve got down to 40 mph...and then she just started choking matches.

i never thought much of Conchita Martinez.

Jana Novotna should have beaten Graf at Wimbledon...giving her 2 slams...but that is what happens. You can say that about a lot of players...including Gaby.

You could have thrown Kim Clijsters in this group as well. Novotna was only a threat on grass as her defense and return were mediocre at best.

Conchita Martinez was a stready player but lacked the weapons to do anything on the grand stage. Did she beat anyone other than Martina in her one run?

Gabby was my favorite player for years and I am partial to her. That said her weak serve could be offset at times when she played to the crowd. Did you ever see her in Miami or New York when she raised her game? If she would have put the work in on improving her serve she could have won a lot more and the fans would have helped her all the way

With her looping, topspin groundstrokes, Sabatini should have won the French several times and it baffles me why she never broke through. She had the perfect game for Roland Garros. I think she just didn't have the killer instinct that Graf and Vicario had which is why she stayed in their shadow. Ditto with Martinez but to a lesser extent. Novotna was a very talented athlete but couldn't get her nerves under control. If she was better in the clutch, she would have at least 2 more Wimbledons in my estimation. I will never forget the way she blew her Wimbledon semi against Hingis several years ago. I've never seen anyone with nerves that bad.

I would have to say Gabrille Sabantani, she had a very talented game, and could really force steffi graf to raise her game to beat her.. i think the problems she had was running into steffi graf and monica seles at there most dominant, and the problems she had with her game is she had a very weak second serve very similar to Elena Dementeva of today, and she was also a big choker like the way Kim Clijsters was, and Amelia Mauresmo before Mauresmo won her grand slams.

Gabriela Sabatini

She won the women's singles title at the US Open in 1990, the women's doubles title at Wimbledon in 1988, and a silver medal at the 1988 Olympic Games.
