you should choose between Michael N and Dr. D for the very informative answer. its good you asked because i just knew it now. from the cursory reading of that rule, is it not unfair for the defending champ like rafa to get nothing if he wins and gets deducted if he is beaten at any point in the tournament? maybe i should ask that myself so i would get the 10pts.

If he wins, he will get the same amount of points as he did last year. If he doesn't win, he will lose points. Given that the ATP runs a revolving 52-week ranking system, the only way to gain points is to do better than you did the same week the previous year.
