Roddick serve is fast and it even seem faster to the receiver because he doesn't toss the ball too high and have to wait for it to come down. If you can strike the ball just at the highest point, it will seen quicker to your opponent. In order to do this, you have to have very good timing.

The pros do it the way that they do because they can get more power out of it. But even when you play you should jump into the court a little bit too so that you can get more power. The reason that they are telling you to hit the ball at the highest point when you serve is because you get the most power up there. Your arm will be fully extended so when you snap your wrist down to hit the ball it will have more force when it goes into the court. If you were to hit the ball when it dropped chances are it would result with the ball going right into the net. Plus the lower the ball gets the less power you will have when you hit it. You need to catch the ball when it is at the highest point and also make sure that you toss the ball out in front of your body. Try tossing the ball a couple of times and let it bounce into the court, when you do this it should land about a foot into the court from where you are standing. The ball should also land at the 1 o' clock position if you had a clock on the court. Tossing the ball here out in front of you will also give you the chance to get a jump into the court for more power like the pros do it.

You can try it yourself if you want to know why.. Take a tennis ball and throw it up but not all away up just from your hand to your head. Then you test it two times with different method. First you throw the ball up and let it fall first and now you can hit it. The second method is, try to throw the ball up and before the ball could fall you hit it first. Can you fell the difference?? You can fell the first method is hard to hit and you can fell the ball is heavy.. The second method is more affective.. that's why you should serve the ball at the highest point.. because it is the easiest point to serve and it can prevent you from injuring you shoulders due to the heavy serve.. Hope this info will help you....

The key to a good serve is hitting the ball as high as possible. If you cannot nail the shot with a fully extended arm, it's almost useless to jump.

A lot of "free" power comes from your reach. This is what makes Roger Federer strokes look so effortless: the further, the faster.

Trust me on this one. I am a high school varsity player and I play a lot of different players. Many times they ARE moonballers because their coach wants them to play steady and conservative. To beat a moonballer, 1) Try to get to the net somehow. Either move them around and wait for a short ball for an approach or winner. Or just make a good angled shot and run up behind it for a winning volley. Especially since you said that they have slow moonballs, which makes it easier for a put away. 2) You could also try to bring them up to the net, if you can hit a good short ball consistently. By doing this, you are taking them out of their comfort zone and making them hit volleys and overheads. Now, you can either lob them or pass them. (You might encounter this: if you hit a short ball and they hit it and then run back to the baseline, let them do that. They're just gonna get tired running up and down (even more tiring than running laterally) eventually they will stay there at the net or run out of energy and make some mistakes)

you're not understanding what they are telling you you are supposed to hit it at the highest point you can reach not as high as the ball goes.

all they are trying to tell you is to hit the ball with a fully extended arm. it gives a cleaner contact, prevents injury, and is just a more powerful and controllable shot compared to hitting low. if you keep hitting the ball low, you're going to tear your elbow and shoulder apart.

if you dont hit the ball high enough you can get a back injury by strain (first hand experience). but every1 is right because that is the one of the ways you get power.
