Changes in moisture causes expansion and contraction which can cause a dead spot.

I live in Queens NYC and at Flushing Meadows on the public courts that are also officially practice courts for the US Open there are tens of dead spots every year. They resurface these courts each year and after no longer then 3 weeks there are dead spots everywhere on these 10 courts. I've carefully watched the workers lay down the upper layer and they seem to be doing a good job. What causes the dead spots in my opinion is the fluctuating air temperature during the days that the upper layer has to dry, bond and cure. Humidity and the content of water in the underlaying soil is also a big factor since those courts are practically built on a swamp.

There are layers of a tennis court. Often when a dead spot occurs it would normally be caused by the surface that they're playing on not being bonded to the concrete or asphalt below the actual court surface.
