A high level player will not have to pay. Either the tournament gives them appearance money or the sponsoring companies (athletic, tennis, and other) will cover the cost of transportation and expenses providing the players wears/uses their products.
However, for lower level players, there is often a fee to enter tournaments and the costs of travel and lodging coming out of their own pockets which can make trying to break into the pros very expensive at first. If players can win some matches in some of these lower level tournaments, they can make a little money, but the real money is after they make it to higher rankings and make it into grand slam events.

I always thought they had to, because when you hear the pro's talking about becoming a tennis player, they often bring up how expensive everything can be, and how alot of the time they have to ask their parents for assistance for the first couple of tournaments in order for them to actually make it. I don't see why the tournaments would pay for them?! I could be wrong? But i highly doubt the a tournament is going to pay for hundreds of players plane tickets etc.

nooo. the tournament will pay it all,, the ticket, the hotels, the foods, the prizes, and even top players usually get an extra money if he joins the tournament.
but if they want to bring their coach or family,, they have to pay it.
