Well, if you want to talk current players--
When he is on his game, and it almost never happens, but we definitely saw some of it during the AO semi last year, Marat Safin could be the best.BUT, Marat can't keep his head screwed on.
So, you have to look to who has proven himself to be the best, and in my opinion, will prove himself to be the best ever to play the game: Roger Federer.
I think Nadal will end up being the best player on clay ever. Even Roger has said that he will never win Roland Garros with Rafael there.

The previous posters seem to have no sense of history. Certainly Rod Laver has to be considered one of the best ever. He won two grand slams (all four major tournaments in one year) and did it seven years apart.
